Training groups 2017 – getting more professional

One of the key goals of Latvian Orienteering Federation is to increase level of professionalism in orienteering. Also the Championship races in the Baltics will add to requirements for professionalism: there will be more visibility of athletes: in orienteering world, in general media, for supporters, and for official parties (e.g. state, anti-doping).

The purpose of the Training Groups

The Groups are for athletes who are seriously training towards coming WOCs in the National Team environment. The Group members are expected to participate in Group activities – helping also others – and will in return get support and inspiration from the coaches and team mates.

The TRAINING Group is NOT a runner ranking – nor it is a reward of past performance! The ranking and rewards for performance will happen through Champs selection.  Being a Group member does NOT affect anyone’s possibilities to qualify for Championship Teams.

There are certain benefits, and obligations for being a Group member. To improve the level of professionalism, fulfilling the obligations will be important: I will demand and monitor a proper participation to activities and fulfillment of tasks by the Group members. Active participation to Group activities will be one of the key criteria for 2018 group selections; these will be done soon after the World Cup Final to ensure enough time for building a winning team for WOC2018.

Below you can find the table of athletes in the Groups for 2017:

    • A Group runners are most potential candidates for WOC 2018 Team
    • Challenger Group members are aiming at World Championships from 2019 onwards
    • There is also a group of people – juniors and seniors not able to participate fully in Group activities – who are informed of NT activities, and are welcome to participate when they can

Below more closely defined obligations for 2017 (based on the criteria set for this year)

    A-Group members are obliged to

    -       Start in WOC races as agreed by team management

    -       Represent LOF in non-sports events (e.g. sponsor events) as agreed with team management

    • “as agreed with team management” above should be understood so, that team management makes a proposal and discusses that with the athlete; after discussion, team management’s judgement is decisive.
